Ruddy Narvaez Jr., 36, was sentenced to three years in state prison, Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey Sutherland said in a news release on Thursday, Nov. 21.

Narvaez was convicted in the crash that killed 66-year-old John Andrew on Tuesday, June 22, 2021. Ocean City police and paramedics responded to the intersection of Ninth Street and Bay Avenue at around 6:10 p.m.

Investigators said Narvaez was speeding and ran a red light in a 2018 Jeep Wrangler. He was heading west when he struck the passenger side of a 2005 Mercury Sable that was turning left onto Bay Avenue from Ninth Street.

Andrew was the Mercury's passenger and was rushed to Shore Medical Center. He was pronounced dead at the Somers Point hospital.

Narvaez was sentenced on Friday, Nov. 15.

"This case underscores the serious consequences of reckless driving and our commitment to holding offenders accountable," Sutherland said. "We hope this sentence serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible behavior on our roadways."

The 48-year-old Somers Point man who drove the Mercury was treated for his injuries at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, Atlantic City Campus.
